Where is the spacecraft going? Distant Retrograde Lunar Orbit

Will they be attempting to recover the first stage? No (not a capability of the SLS)

Where will the first stage land? The SRBs will splash down in the Atlantic Ocean and the core stage will splash down in the Pacific Ocean

Will they be attempting to recover the fairings? No, the launch abort system (LAS) and fairing are not recovered

NASA's Space Launch System will boost an uncrewed Orion spacecraft into a lunar flyby mission named Artemis I (formerly known as Exploration Mission 1, EM-1). Orion will travel past the moon and swing into a distant retrograde orbit with an average distance of more than 70000 kilometers from the lunar surface. The capsule will carry several dummies, one wearing an Orion astronaut spacesuit named “Commander Moonikin Campos”, and two others in recumbent passenger seats. The mannequins are fitted with thousands of sensors to measure acceleration, vibration, and radiation levels throughout the Orion spacecraft’s trip from Earth to the moon and back. Secondary payloads will be 10 CubeSats; NEA Scout, BioSentinel, Lunar IceCube, LunaH-Map, CuSP, EQUULEUS, OMOTENASHI, LunIR, Team Miles and ArgoMoon. The CubeSats will be deployed from the ICPS upper stage and are housed in the second stage adapter. The rocket will fly in the Block 1 configuration with an ICPS upper stage.

This will be the:

– 1st launch of the Space Launch System

– 2nd orbital launch of the Orion spacecraft

– 3rd overall flight of the Orion spacecraft

– 111th orbital launch attempt of 2022

– Furthest a spacecraft for crew will have ever been from the Earth

– Most powerful rocket in the world at the time of launch (depending on how you count Starship)
