Western Caribbean Is a Hot Spot for Tropical Development in October and Here's Why We're Watching It Now

An area of low pressure in the southwestern Caribbean Sea is being monitored for tropical development.
This area is a hot spot for tropical cyclone formation in October.
Tropical activity in the Caribbean may be fairly quiet now, but there is an area of low pressure to watch for possible development in a location favorable for development in October.

A broad area of low pressure is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms in the southwestern Caribbean Sea.

This system will be slow to organize, but some gradual development is possible late this week and this weekend.

Overall, conditions are not too favorable, and the National Hurricane Center has given this area a low chance of development in the next five days.

Moderate to high wind shear is in the path of this area of low pressure, which will help to inhibit tropical development in the near-term future.

This disturbance is expected to drift toward Cuba over the next few days.

Regardless of development, rain and thunderstorms will spread across the region as this system moves northward into late-week.

It's too early to determine the path of this low-pressure system heading into next week and if there may be any potential impacts to the United States.

If this disturbance is able to organize and strengthen into a tropical storm, it would receive the name Michael.

Western Caribbean Is an Area of Concern in October
This latest disturbance is in the western Caribbean, one of the areas that can be a hot spot for tropical cyclone development at this time of year.

Although the peak of the hurricane season – Sept. 10 – has passed, the Atlantic Basin can still be busy with tropical activity in October and even November.

In October, the areas where tropical cyclones are more likely to form are closer to the U.S. instead of farther east in the Atlantic.

Specifically, the western Caribbean Sea, eastern Gulf of Mexico and the far western Atlantic Ocean need to be monitored closely for tropical development in October.

Land is near these areas, so that means if something develops quickly, impacts can be a big concern.

Since 1950, there have been 15 hurricane landfalls in October in the U.S., so hurricane season is not over just yet.
