Description

A new supercomputer simulation of how galaxies grow may have illuminated the mysterious lack of matter around the cores of galaxies.

Caltech scientists and others have recently observed that there seem to be more heavy elements in the regions surrounding galaxies than within the star-filled territory of the galaxies themselves.

The Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project, while simulating the evolution of galaxies since the Big Bang, has 'seen' super-winds, blowing heavy elemental into the rural provinces of galaxies with a generally outward flow.

These new sims can also illuminate the shadowy mystery of how dark matter congregates around the cores of galaxies
